Traits of Effective Leadership

Honesty
Being honest is one of the most vital effective leadership traits in successful leaders. Honesty should be shown towards the organization which the leader is leading and also towards his fellow employees and stake holders of the organization. Whether it is a small company or a large multi-national organization, honesty in the leadership of the company alone can take it ahead on the path of progress. Honest leaders have a lot of mass support and respect in their company, as well as in the society. The unity in the company increases a lot with honest leadership.

Talent
Talent must be included in the effective leadership traits list. If you observe carefully, you will notice that most of the famous world leaders are highly qualified and have the ability to think in a more creative and unique way than the rest of the world. These people are visionaries and know very well, what will be the short term as well as the long term effects of their actions. Reasoning abilities, decision making, effective management and effective leadership styles constitute the concept of 'talent'. Though many leaders are said to be 'born-talented', this talent gets nurtured only with practical experience.

Confidence and Enthusiasm

Confidence and enthusiasm are the essential and effective leadership traits, which make a great leader. A good leader should always be charged up and should boost the morale of his workforce. He should have tremendous energy and enthusiasm to work for long hours and achieve the set targets. Having faith in one's abilities and the eagerness to learn new things, improving with the changing times by adapting to the new technologies and learning from the previous mistakes are all signs of a smart and effective leadership. However, one should note that over confidence and excessive false pride can be a hindrance to the progress and development of the company or a team. The effective leadership traits include generating a team spirit among the workforce by proper implementation of strategies.

Respecting Opinions of Others
Another one of the effective leadership traits is the important value of respecting the opinions of others. While taking any decision, whether big or small, all the concerned persons should be consulted and given prior information. Give the freedom to every person to voice his/her opinion freely and try to implement all those suggestions which are in the good interests of the team or organization. Taking decisions on your own without taking into account the presence of others gives rise to unnecessary feelings of rivalry and hatred, which will definitely prove to be detrimental to the interests of the entire group.

Presence of Mind and Decision Taking Abilities
Presence of mind and decision taking abilities are those effective leadership traits which can make a very successful leader. There are many situations wherein some kind of difficulties attack the progress or even the existence of the group. Such situations can be overcome by presence of mind and taking brave decisions at the right time. Decision making is a very complex process and needs a dynamic leader to complete it. Great Leaders are Great Listeners

When we ask participants in seminars why it is important to listen, the responses almost always relate to the need to gain accurate information from employees. That is correct, but it’s only a small part of the reason why it’s important to listen. A greater concern to a leader should be that their employees truly believe that their leader cares about them. One way to say that you truly care about employees and value their opinions is by listening to them with undivided attention.

The following tips will help you to listen more accurately and convey the feeling to others that you really do care about them and value their opinions. Listening involves not only hearing the speaker’s words, but also understanding the message and its importance to the speaker, and then communicating that understanding to the speaker.

Following these five guidelines will improve your listening ability:

   1. Develop an attitude of wanting to listen.

Being a good listener starts with a positive attitude toward listening. If you are not in the right frame of mind for listening, you will miss valuable information. Remember, you can learn something from everyone. And if you cannot listen at this time, reschedule the conversation for another time when you will be able to give the other person your undivided attention. They will be thankful and impressed that you care enough to reschedule.

   2. Focus your attention on understanding the other person’s meaning, not on formulating your response.

A good listener is “other-focused” rather than “self-focused.” Your goal is to understand the other person. Show the speaker that you are listening by using “attending skills.”
          * Maintain eye contact to show interest and to observe the speaker.
          * Lean forward slightly to communicate concern and to better comprehend the message.
          * Come out from behind a desk or any other physical barrier.
          * Nod your head to indicate understanding.
          * Smile when the speaker uses humor.
          * Allow for pauses–don’t feel you have to fill the space with your words while the other person needs time to collect his or her thoughts.

   3. Use open-ended questions to open up communication.

Open-ended questions facilitate the conversation and provide an invitation to respond back and forth. They also let the other person know that his or her thinking is important to you.

   4. Use paraphrasing to ensure understanding.

Paraphrasing shows the speaker that you are listening and that you understand what he or she has said. It also ensures that your interpretation of the message is correct.

      Examples:
          * “You think the XYZ program is not a good idea because…”
          * “It sounds like your major concerns on this project are…”

   5. Summarize conversations to ensure understanding and provide closure.

A summary statement is a concise restatement of the key points discussed during a lengthy conversation. The summary brings the conversation to a close. It may also include a recap of specific actions or agreements made during the conversation.

      Examples:
          * “It seems that we agree that the project has gotten off track and that we will take the following steps to correct the situation…”
          * “As I understand it, you feel that we should bring the marketing people in on this proposal. As we discussed, I will contact them and set up a meeting for next week to discuss their involvement.”

8 Steps to Becoming the Leader You’ve Always Wanted to Be

True leaders understand that success does not depend on their titles, but on the values they uphold and the choices they make on a daily basis. They know that leadership is not achieved through technical expertise, but rather is based on a relationship with their followers. It is our hope that the following insights will help you with the “relationship savvy” you need to be a great supervisor, and an outstanding leader.

1.Acknowledge that the world is rapidly changing.
You can decide that you are going to help create change and learn from it, or you can try to resist change. The current state of the economy is proof that it is important to change. Managers and employees alike will need to remove themselves from their comfort zones, whatever those may be, to enable their organization to survive the economy and come out on top.

2.Focus on opportunities, not on what you cannot change.
Where are you going to spend your energy? Complaining about things you cannot change or revamping the things you can? Believing that your destiny is in someone else’s hands relieves you of responsibility for your own actions. Focus on what you can do and take responsibility. There is power in responsibility.

   3. Lead with your heart AND head.
We recently heard a manager say that he did not care about people’s emotions. He went on to say, “We have a job to get done!” Unfortunately, people are the ones who are going to get that job done. And, people have feelings. In fact, everything about motivation and the desire to do good work is based on a feeling. If we do not consider people’s feelings, it is impossible to be an effective leader.

4.Reach out to people who have different perspectives.
There is no challenge in communicating with people who think just like you. Communicating with people who have different views requires you to think outside of the box when explaining your thoughts and exposes you to new ideas or perspectives you may have not encountered otherwise.

   5.Become comfortable with the unknown.
One of the necessities to becoming empowered is to feel at ease with the unknown. As fast as our environment is changing, it is impossible to know all the facts or have all the answers all the time.

   6. Develop a leadership “tool kit.”
No one can have all the answers. What you can develop is a “tool kit” of resources that can help to solve problems. If you only have a hammer, you tend to see every problem as a nail. Collect information, and then learn and practice leadership and management techniques. Remember, good leaders never stop learning.

   7.Look for multiple right answers.
With technology rapidly changing, we can no longer afford to look unilaterally for one right answer. Become multilateral in your thinking. Search for possibilities–not just one solution.

   8.Substitute effectiveness for perfectionism.
If you wait until all the available information is in to make your decisions, the chances are you have waited too long. In a world of increasing competition, we can no longer afford the luxury of waiting until something is absolutely perfect.

Why Does Fear Lead to Failure?

by: Susan Bagyura

While touring the States doing TV and radio interviews recently, I had the chance to listen to the story of a once very successful business in Connecticut which was announcing the layoff of 475 workers. What had gone wrong?

The CEO was interviewed and he said that their business started hitting bad times 4 years ago and their strategy was to cut, reduce and eliminate expenditures since then. He went on to say that they had been trying to avoid these layoffs for sometime but they no longer could.

He had excuses as to why this had to happen, including blaming the economy. The way he recounted the past, he made the company and the employees all victims of circumstance.

In other interviews, I saw the despair of some of the workers that were losing their jobs. They talked about events and circumstances as well as their fears of this happening. It was obvious that they never made any connection to their thoughts, feelings and actions and what they were seeing in their outer world.

Never once during all the newscasts, interviews and subsequent articles did I ever hear or read about the creative measures that the company took to turn the business around. Instead everyone from the CEO on down continues to focus on lack, limitation and outside influences as the basis of their problems. The responses to their creation are tactics that are killing the business.

People in this company, including the CEO, showed their ignorance of the law of sowing and reaping; also known as the law of cause and effect. It is absolutely impossible to create a healthy, wealthy, thriving business while holding thoughts of worry and doubt; feeling fearful and full of anxiety and taking destructive actions. Whatever we think in our minds must grow.

The condition is the effect that we see; it is not the true cause that we see. One must dig down deep into their mental storehouse to find out what is that cause. If they cannot discern it, there are others who can. Now I have no doubt that there were people that supported the actions that the CEO took; so therefore it is critical to look at the results of any advisor. If you are going to follow someone, make certain that they are achieving great results.

This business is not where it is today because of outside conditions. This CEO programmed the company for failure by the very actions he took based on the wrong thinking. The very things he feared are what he has created and he will continue to do so until he changes his vision.

There are many people who live and die and never know anything different from what has been handed down to them. However once you change your vision, you will change conditions. Only when we cease to recognize a condition do we cease to attract or create it. The only way we can cease to recognize things is to change our minds about them.

There are 3 enemies which must be cleared out in order to achieve success in any endeavor. These are fear, worry/doubt and indecision. They always go together. If a person is timid, backward or fearful, fear will act as a brake to retard their progress. Fear is main cause of failures; it cannot be eliminated by either drugs or a surgeon's knife. The only remedy known for fear is understanding. This requires a commitment to studying and applying what is learned. It definitely requires getting out of the comfort zone - to stop doing the same old things that aren't working.

Indecision is the seed of fear. Indecision turns into doubt. The two blended together become fear. This blending process is often slow, which is the main reason why these 3 enemies are so dangerous. They are insidious and grow without their presence even being noticed. Many times people fool themselves to think that they are being cautious when they are actually breeding fear.

Fears are nothing more than a state of mind. One's state of mind will set the course and direction of their future. Doubts and fears about the future are pointless, but even worse; they will create an unwanted future.

Conversely, success is predicated on bringing one's self and actions to a higher standard. When the heart is right, the head thinks right. The fact that someone desires to succeed is evidence that they have the power to succeed; otherwise they would not have been urged to aspire towards success. Understand that you cannot aspire to succeed unless you have the power to succeed. Desire creates the power; power inspires the mind of the person, and success is the result of that inspiration rightly applied.

Success then is the way we learn to use 2 valuable things - our time and thought. Knowledge alone is not success; it is the way we use that knowledge...

What Does It Take to Become a Leader?

by: kaka

Many people think that you are simply born a leader however this could not be further from the truth. Each and every one of us has the skills to lead, however we seldom put ourselves forward or find ourselves in situations when we have to take this sort of responsibility.

Of course there are certain skills you need to be a leader and each of them are more suited to certain people than others. However to become a great leader it is about having that burning desire to want to improve and hone all the necessary skills. The following therefore is a list of the traits needed to be a good leader.

Communication

This is a vital component. A good leader needs to be able to communicate ideas effectively and to great understanding. You may be excellent at building strategic plans but without having the skills to communicate them effectively you will always fall short.

Decisiveness

A strong leader needs to be able to make decisions based on logical reasoning when under pressure. In times of need people will look to you and a split second of doubt or appearing visibly distressed can undo years of hard work building trust.

Listening Skills

Listening skills is important in most parts of life. As a leader you should have the ability to pay attention and understand people and this includes taking on board criticism.

Prioritisation

What task needs doing first? You need to be able to prioritise tasks based on what you think is most important. Without good prioritisation the task at hand can be doomed to failure before it even begins.

Self-Control

The ability to keep your emotions under control is vital. You will have to deal with many different people and situations, a lot of which will most likely put you out of your comfort zone. It is important therefore that you keep calm and collected at all times.

Self confidence

Being self-confident goes a long way. If you appear fully confident then it will rub off on your team making any task a lot easier to accomplish. A certain amount of self-confidence also helps you to assert yourself when the time comes.

Pro Active

As a leader it is your duty to keep your team on their toes. Taking a back seat or being lazy creates complacency therefore it is important you take a pro-active approach.

Good at Planning

Simply knowing what needs to be achieved is not enough. To be a good leader you need to be able to create a plan of action that will work to achieve the end goal. A poor plan will scupper the chances for success and so this skill is vital.

Have Respect for Others

You may be in a position of power as a leader but your team will not willing follow you if you have no respect for others. Respect goes a long way and the best way to earn it is by respecting others.

Build Trust

Trust is a fragile but the most important aspect. Without trust you will never be a god leader. By improving some of the factors listed above it should go a long way to helping build trust quickly.

The beauty of all the aspects listed is that you can easily be trained to improve. There are many courses that can help you improve your leadership skills including numerous aspects not mentioned here.

The great thing about taking the decision to improve is that what you learn can be applied to all walks of life. So remember, we all have it in us to be a leader it's just about bringing out those qualities...

Leadership Transcends Leaders

by: Lee Meadows

As much as the concept of leadership can spark a debate as to who are good leaders and who are bad leaders, the essence of the debate rarely touches on an often overlooked, seldom mentioned, but critical component of the dialogue. Though personality, skill, style and circumstances are the most frequently researched elements, it is interesting to note that the ‘mindset' of a leader has only begun to inch its way into mainstream recognition.

The notion of mindset has little to do with high or medium intelligence, street smarts, political aptitude or business cunning. These are all by products of the greater positioning of a thought process that moves beyond established boundaries and into a realm in which the product or service transcends the existence of the leader. This ‘transcendent leadership' mindset represents more than a leader making a contribution, which satisfies many of the short term requirements for living, but is fueled by the idea of making a difference, which addresses the long term requirements for advancing humankind.

While research in this area has just started to emerge, the concept is not without working models in which to analyze and stimulate the thinking for future leadership development activities. The framers of the United States Constitution were clearly well-schooled, committed scholars and fighters who, individually, understood the importance of braking from the restrictive practices of an established government. The numerous biographies written about these men are woven around a common thread of dissatisfaction with the status quo and the recognition that something needed to change.

As individual leaders, the effectiveness of their styles have been picked at and picked on through a series of scholarly reviews of their writings and actions from that era. However, collectively, the framers were a perfect example of the transcendent leadership mindset. They knew that what they were creating would be something that would outlast and transcend their existence. The long term effect would be for future generations to enjoy the benefits of a country in which individual freedom would be more important that governmental restrictions. As the last signer of the constitution faded into oblivion, he had to take some delight in knowing that many of their names would not be known among 21st century school children, but they would truly feel the impact.

Walt Disney understood something about the nature of human beings that went beyond the classic debate as to whether man is good or evil. As a cartoonist and creator of ‘basic-values based' entertainment, it must have dawned on him that man's good or evil is rooted in being ‘playful' and if given the opportunity to play, we will. The thought process that went into the formation of Disneyland is indicative of a ‘transcendent leadership mindset'. While there were competing studios that managed to grind out a slew of characters designed to entertain the short term requirements of their audience, Disney saw beyond the silver screen and into the long term access to playfulness that would draw generation after generation to the Magic Kingdom.

A transcendent leader connects today with tomorrow by looking past the inner drive that anchors personal behavior and ego-centric limitations and focuses on how any organization can move beyond just meeting its goals. Having the ability and fortitude to take something that is static and make it dynamic, to elevate behavior to the next level of interaction and to position the mind to think as a ‘difference maker' are only a few of the known qualities that are gleaned from the models established by the Founding Fathers, Disney and others.

There are overlapping qualities from other models that also serve the mindset of a transcendent leader. Clearly the ability to formulate a vision that moves an organization to think beyond its bottom line is an important piece to this mindset model. We have thousands of examples of how to transact and transform organizations, but those organizations that are rooted in a transcendent leadership mindset are, understandably, few and far between...

How to Avoid Mismanagement Issues and be a Good Leader

By: Steve Morgan

There's many things a manager can do to make certain employees and fellow managers are content whilst staying as productive as possible, whether it is a new leader or an old leader seeking to improve their management skills. People who have been mismanaged before by a lousy boss will understand the frustration it can cause them and other people directly affected.

To be a good leader means being a great listener, good at your own work, able to oversee, motivate and teach others, tactful, authoritative when it is important and being able to access circumstances and react enthusiastically. There's much to transforming into and being a great leader and it is handy to get used to your responsibilities early on so that everyone is aware of your ways of operating and that they are able to go to you if they have any problems.

Leadership and management training courses are becoming more and more popular in workplaces. Lots of people are propelled into a management role with no leadership training and this is what caused problems to appear. Being a good manager is something that requires learning over time through experience and training. It is true what they say - it's tough at the top and there are many challenges you will encounter as a leader during your career.

Managing Environment – de-carbonization

Every nation needs a transition, from an economy which uses fossil fuels for energy supply to one in which all energy comes from either renewable or low carbon sources.  The only problem with that is, assuming we had all the technologies available and a market hungry for their deployment, yet the process of global de-carbonization would take a very long time to be achieved physically. Any move towards global de-carbonization will encounter several key barriers such as:

To begin with, many of the potential technologies are still a significant way from being ready for widespread deployment because of lack of qualified engineers, technicians and even technology.

The most significant markets around the world are simply not that interested. Green energy is expensive and the free market has consistently shown that the cheapest approach is to dig up fossil fuels and burn them.

The big question therefore is, if we haven’t got enough time to de-carbonize the global economy before the mean global temperature rise passes 20C. Is there something we can do to avoid a dangerous climate change and a 40 C to 60 C outcome? Is there something we can do to buy us some time while we go about this business of a low carbon transition, one which does not distract us from the principal objective? The answer to that may be found in geo-engineering.

Geo-engineering may provide an option:

IMechE carried out a review of promising geo-engineering approaches, and made an initial engineering assessment of the feasibility of the most practical solutions. The Institution presents the three most promising case studies and provides an engineer’s view of the steps needed to make geo-engineering a reality.  This report clearly highlights  the role of engineers in finding alternatives  to mitigation and adaptation and thereby buying time for humanity.

For many years governments have primarily focused on climate change mitigation, or in simple terms, reducing the amount of carbon-dioxide each nation emits into the atmosphere. Indeed, the UK government recently released its low carbon transition plans, which the Institution welcomes as a positive plan of action for the next decade.

Engineers have been at work to find out if there is a possibility of an approach beyond mitigation and adaptation. However, a less explored avenue is geo-engineering. This is where technology is used to remove CO2 from the atmosphere or where the planet is cooled by reflecting solar radiation back into space. Geo-engineering is not an all encompassing solution to global warming. It is however, another potential component in our approach to climate change that could provide the world with extra time to decarbonize the global economy.

The initial assessment of a range of potential geo-engineering options is available under its- ‘cooling the planet program.’

Artificial trees:

Research is being   undertaken into building machines which, like trees can remove CO2 from the atmosphere. This occurs when air passes through the device (the tree) and CO2 is then removed and buried underground in the same way as conventional carbon capture and storage (CCS). The UK would require 100,000 trees, each absorbing ten tonnes of CO2 per day) to capture the entire nation’s non-stationary and dispersed emissions.

Algae coated Buildings:

This approach uses strips of algae which are fitted outside the buildings. Algae naturally absorb CO2 through photosynthesis. The algae are then periodically harvested from building surfaces and used as bio-fuel in conjunction with a carbon based solution. The advantage of this proposal is that no additional land is required therefore it will not affect existing and future food production or other important land uses.

Reflective Buildings:

Reducing the amount of solar radiation absorbed by the earth’s climate system has the potential to cool the planet. This can simply be achieved by making surfaces more reflective and thus lowering the heating effect the sun’s rays have on us. This option may not be as effective as the other two, though  it does have the additional benefit of reducing temperatures in city centres. City centres can often be several degrees hotter than the surrounding environment.

The relative use of these technologies needs to be assessed. It is also important that these potential options are not seen as alternative to climate change mitigation.

Funding for geo-engineering research is granted by the government. Any such research must be linked with existing mitigation and adaptation research.

Action must be taken for a parallel de-carbonization and expansion of global electricity generation capacity including deployment of smart super-grids on a continental scale and parallel research and development of electric transportation technologies and technologies for de-carbonization of dispersed sources.

Phased electrification of transportation sector and dispersed sources of carbon dioxide emissions. Artificial trees should be used to clean up past emissions to such a level that the atmospheric carbon dioxide concentration returns to climatically accepted levels.

Role of engineers in mitigation and adaptation measures for climate change management has often gone unnoticed as all perspective studies are covered under  the term ‘scientific studies’ which gives the  impression that only scientists are the key players. Searching  for geo-engineering solutions has been undertaken by the scientists at their level but the lead role has to go to the engineers.

Take Control of Your Life or Personal Leadership

Each day you have the ability to make the choice to take control of your life, or to let it control you. You can either be proactive, or you can let circumstances call the shots.

take control of your lifeTo take control of your life or exercise personal leadership is to take responsibility for yourself and for every area of your life. It means being connected with your values, your vision and to set meaningful goals for yourself. When you do, you become more productive, more optimistic, able to solve problems more easily and ultimately have less stress in your life.

No doubt, with all the chaos and uncertainty that is going in the world these days it may be difficult to feel like you are in charge of your life, and while there are some things you have no control over, there is much that you do. Understand that you are the principal architect and creator of your life and that you are where you are at, because of the choices and decisions you have made thus far.

An interesting concept that I came across in my readings recently, and as it relates to personal leadership, is to see yourself as the CEO of your own life. If you were to apply it to yourself, how would run your life? What kind of strategic planning would you do and how would you envision your future? I would guess that in seeing yourself as the CEO of your life, you would be inspired to think in a more effective, results oriented manner.

As your own CEO, here are some ways in which you can take control of your life and exercise personal leadership:

Determine your values and what's important to you.  As I wrote in Have A Personal Value System, knowing what your values are gives you structure and purpose, which in turn directs you on how to focus your time and efforts. It would be similar to the 'mission statement' a company would hold. As you probably know, a mission statement typically spells out the overall goals and drives the actions of an organization. It likewise provides a roadmap and guides the decision-making processes for management.

personal leadership In your life your mission statement could be something like: "My purpose is to live life to the fullest by taking the care of my health, relationships, finances and overall happiness to the best of my abilities."

When you state your objective so succinctly, you can't help but be focused and take the right actions for where you need to be. This also helps keep you from being aimless and scattered, not to mention avoiding hit and miss situations.

Plan, be organized and set goals. Think of the big picture of what you want in your life and then break it down to manageable parts. For everything that you want to accomplish, you need a strategy or action plan. One way is to set goals appropriate to your mission statement and then devise a plan on how to go about achieving them. Nothing happens by itself; so taking charge of your life entails taking the bull by the horns. Rather than daydreaming about what you want or engaging in wishful thinking, you set the wheels in motion for success. In fact, the planning stages can actually be fun and challenging! Not only will you achieve your objectives, you will sharpen your critical thinking and problem solving skills in the process. The most successful CEOs in the world are those who set realistic, achievable goals for their companies, plan the best strategies and then execute them accordingly. They also set their priorities, organize their tasks and duties and make sure all the different departments are running smoothly and efficiently. There is a famous quote that states, "If you fail to plan, you plan to fail."

Maintain a positive attitude. Sometimes one of the hardest things to do is remain positive when your best efforts to take control of your life don't go according to plan. As any CEO will tell you, there are always obstacles and roadblocks that get in the way of any launch or rollout. In another similar example, ask any athlete, inventor or composer. Would you think that everything comes together for them smoothly and without any glitches? Definitely not!
The quality or character trait that separates those who succeed and those that do not, is a positive attitude and an unshakable belief in themselves. They do not let negative thoughts or obstacles get in the way of ultimate achievement. Of course, that does not mean that it is easy; it means that persistence and focus are necessary. Those who cannot maintain control of their lives quite often want to give up at first sign of trouble or difficulty. When that happens, all else seems to unravel as well, and they mistakenly feel they have no control of anything at all in their lives. This type of mindset is both counterproductive and detrimental to progress. Maintaining a positive attitude is absolutely essential for taking control of your life.

personalHave fun. While taking control of your life involves a lot of planning, strategy and executing, it could weigh you down if you forget to take time to have some fun. Living a full, productive life requires maintaining balance between work, relaxation and recreation. Too much structure makes Jack or Jill a dull person.

To take control of your life try an experiment by envisioning yourself as the CEO of your personal company - your own life. The concept alone will make you feel more in control. Then make the types of plans, choices and decisions that you would expect a successful CEO would make and you will be surprised at how much more in control of your life you will feel. It may take some practice and role playing, but the outcome will be - YOU in control of your life.

Green Bean Project Management

The Monkeys in the Middle are honored to have a guest article this week by Mr. Peter Taylor, the author of The Lazy Project Manager.

How should new project managers learn from the ‘Old beans’

When my kids were young they loved to play one particular game at the annual birthday parties. This game involved ‘Beans’ – all of the kids standing ready and waiting for instructions and then the cry would go up of ‘Beans’ and the game would begin. ‘Runner beans’ as a call would mean that everyone had to run on the spot. ‘Jumping beans’ meant, naturally, a lot of jumping up and down in one place. ‘French beans’ meant a chorus of ‘Ooh la la’s’ and waving of arms in a posh French way. And ‘Baked beans’ meant … well you know kids so I am sure that you can work that one out for yourself. It goes without saying this is the one ‘Bean’ that they loved the most.
Then at the end a final call would be ‘Human beans’ and the kids were back to normal human beings (or back to kids anyway which meant even more noise and dancing around and general excitement).

At my new company I hear a lot about ‘Green beans’ and the challenge of inducting and developing raw talent in to the organization. So when the call goes up of ‘Green beans’ for project managers what should this mean?

I think that key to having a successful induction of the ‘Project beans’ will include:

Give them a safe place to start

Projects are, by their very nature, tricky beasts and for a ‘newbie’ to learn the practical skills of project management we should ensure that they enter the PM world in a controlled way. Hopefully being handed a new project to lead and being told to ‘get on with it’ (as I was when I became a PM) is long gone. Rather we should allow the ‘Green beans’ to experience project reality by taking up a small part in another project managers project, and watching and learning and getting involved in a small way. In addition, if there are project reviews, health checks, and retrospectives taking place (and I really hope that there are) then this is another great entry experience for the young ones to see and learn. Another safe(r) environment might be internal projects – rather than external customer facing ones.
Key is to make the environment of learning a safe one.

Give them a friendly place to work

Where should they work and report when they first start out? Well don’t leave them out in the cold and without peers and project professionals around them. If you have a project practise then this is the place to nurture those ‘beans’. Make it easy for them to ask the questions that they will need to ask and make it easy for them to see experienced project managers in action.
We all know that there is a world of difference between theory and practice so give them the support they need to move away from the theory.
Key is to make it easy for them to find out all of the stuff that will need to find out.

Give them a helping hand

Appoint a mentor from out there in project management land who will be there to listen to them from time to time and gently point them in the right direction when they need help – such a person will be invaluable to the ‘beans’ in the early days of being a project manager.
Encourage them to make the effort to look outside your organization and connect to some truly wonderful project managers and experts out there on the www. There is a huge amount of advice and guidance through local project management groups, through conferences and meetings, through the online discussions and blogs, and lots more. (It may be in this area the ‘Green’ ones might have the upper hand on us ‘Grey’ ones since all this social connectivity is second nature to them). Key is to build the best possible network for now and the future and to use it wisely.

A final thought

And a final word for the ‘Green beans’ themselves. Be enthusiastic at all times. Trust me; project management is a great place to be right now, you probably won’t be able to stop yourself smiling.

So when the cry goes up of ‘Project beans’ join in all that noise and excitement along with all the other ‘Project beans’ (We will be shouting and dancing as best as our ‘Old bean’ legs will let us).

I kind of wish I was ‘Green’ all over again.
